Hand Made

We rarely pass a day – let alone an hour – without interacting with a piece of modern technology. It has become a part of every aspect of our lives; from the time our alarm clock wakes us up to the minute we turn out the lights and go to sleep. Today it is hard to imagine a world without these modern technologies, and they have become so entwined in our lives, that our relationship with them is inseparable. We are now more reliant on modern technologies than ever before. What we have come completely dependent upon is taken for granted, so much so that even in the absence of only one or two, our whole efficient and ever so complicated world could come crumbling down.

“Lo! Men have become the tools of their tools”
– Henry David Thoreau.

Despite the frustrating technical issues and initial process of learning, once we have a handle on it, we rarely stop to consider
or acknowledge its existence or what life was like without it. Once settled in the ‘after’, the ‘before’ seems so impossible. This item becomes another loyal servant, aiding us in our every day life, of which we disassociate ourselves with and just expect without question.

For designers, the introduction of the computer has seen significant changes in the approach to design. Today it is seen as common place, and in this place it is important to consider just how much of a role modern technology plays in the design process. Therefore, to learn to appreciate the advances in technologies that are so taken for granted, they need to be removed or simply replaced with a less efficient and more hands on approach. This struggle can teach us to re-associate ourselves with what is it is that makes up the process of modern creations.

‘Hand Made’ is the first in a series of 5 graphic studies that explore the relationship between graphic design and technology. It involves literally recording the entire construction of the piece and examining all contributing tools and means to the end. The primary focus is on old and new technologies, their relation to the design process, and their relationship to each other. A documentation of its own creation, it contains a series of photographs that depict the stages involved in its development, production and execution.

By documenting this process, we can explore what techniques and technologies used to create the outcome and examine how each technological item is integrated within this process. In addition, it is important to note that the process undertaken in this study is only one possible solution to attaining its outcome. There are several ways this piece could have been approached, all of which have their pros and cons. The approach chosen had some variables to take into consideration, these include the cost of production - seeing as it is a limited edition, one item is more costly to run, the efficiency of the methods used - the time for development also has an impact on cost in the sense that time taken to create something represents a value of money,
etc. It is these issues and restraints that make up the process and technologies that have undergone such change and advancement, and these variables are
what the study aims to explore.
